Gate to the Great Buddah

Bagua Mountain, Changhua Taiwan. This is my daily cardiovascular workout area. I have lost count of how many times I have walked these steps. Just beautiful, especially in the evening. It is also a nice refuge during the hot summer months because the temperature here can be as much as 5-7 degrees cooler than down in the city. Love it!

Market Day

Everyday is market day in Changhua. I could sketch this place one thousand times and every time would be different. It's hustle and bustle to the nth degree. Taiwan Fishing Boat

An old Taiwan fishing boat tied up at a harbor in Kending Taiwan. What caught my eye was the very narrow frontal perspective. It looked so top heavy, I expected it to topple over. There must be quite a large mass below the waterline to balance it. This particular boat has seen better days but still earns it's money by going out every night to catch what the sea will offer. Don't know why I drew the front view so small-maybe to emphasize how really, really small the bottom was.

Just Enough Water for a Scenic Boat Cruise on Sun Moon Lake in Taiwan

China tourists buying tickets for a scenic cruise on Sun Moon Lake. Taiwan is experiencing a severe water reserve shortage, but the show must go on. Maybe if the water gets low enough they can put wheels on the bottom of the boats. Noodler's Ahab flex pen with Noodler's black ink in a Molskine watercolor journal.

Thinking About Better Days

I often take a ride around Bagua Mountain on my scooter. There is a very large complex there where old soldiers live out their days washing their t-shirts and staring out at the highway. It is actually a sad place (for me). These silent old gentlemen, who gave what was needed, are now sitting in the shadows-pretty much forgotten. This old fellow had a burning cigarette in his mouth and was fast asleep. I was relieved to see him wake as the burning tip approached his mouth. I think this is something he is quite accustomed to. Don't forget these guys.

Car Spa

This car wash is about 5 minutes from my house. It is, in my opinion, the best car wash in Changhua. It is operated by a husband and wife team and they really do a great job for the price.

Beautiful Checheng

Just a short train ride from Changhua is the beautiful Checheng. I often go there just to drink coffee and take in the overwhelming green of the adjacent mountain. Yes, it really is that green-even in winter. I will usually go there during the week when there is hardly anyone around. To have all that to yourself is a special feeling.A lot of my Taiwan friends say it's too boring there, but I feel that we don't always need to see, hear and smell the hustle and bustle of the typical tourist areas to enjoy ourselves. Sometimes just a cup of coffee and a green mountain is enough.

舊金山 #38 SketchCrawl

SketchCrawl是一邊爬走一邊速寫的組合字，這個團體是從舊金山發起的。發起人Enrico Casarosa是插畫/動畫/卡通畫家，也是La Luna的導演。在一次朋友的最後單身派對，大家創意打算創紀錄一天去十間酒吧慶祝，雖然到第七間，大家就各自解散了，不過Casarosa回家靈機轉一轉搭配熱愛畫畫的因子，轉出花一整天帶支筆及水彩色盤一路畫下看見的城市風景、人事物的構想。一路從家門口，畫建築、公車上的乘客、咖啡店的咖啡，一路畫到回家。一個人畫不過癮，乾脆找三五畫友一起，於是SketchCrawl就這樣在坊間傳開誕生。一傳開，就成了世界同好競相跟隨的活動，好厲害！

有幸在1/19因緣際會下，鼓起勇氣也去參加了這個“自由參加”的速寫馬拉松 (早上十點半到下午四點半)，沒有見到Enrico Cassarosa本人，但是也見到好多熱情又熱血的同好。舊金山風景很漂亮，當天天氣也特別好，寒冬裡難得的陽光，和大家分享一下當天速寫的作品：
